Computer for Storage

Can anybody give me recommendations on what kind of computer I would need (CPU, memory) and the software needed to build a computer for storage only? I'll be connecting it through my switch which runs at 100Mbits.

Anything Really. 300Mhz and up, even a K6-3 would be OK. (a K6 450 would be perfect IMO)
128 megs ram
100bt nic

Thats the basics. Now for storage, if its important, you could go with a raid setup with back-up. If speed is important, go for a scuzzy like thingy drives and a interface card (unless the MB has it).

Dont know much past IDE, but there are several people here that will help ya pick the proper drive.

Just gonna host some MP3's so I can access from ALL over the house. Also, nice to have a network drive to back stuff on to.

Right now, I was hoping to spend under $500 which seems like I can if such a low power chip will be more than sufficient. The problem is finding these antiques.🙂 Since I'm on this budget, I don't think I'll be going the SCSI route. Maybe an IDE Raid just to have some fun.

Also, what software should I run? Windows 2000 or some Linux variant?
