Computer Flinching

I just built a new computer about 5 minutes ago:

Intel Desktop Board D915GAG
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 530 ( 3ghz)800mhzFSB 1MB L2 Cache
1gb of DDR400 PC3200 (2xsticks of 512) GEIL
Western Digital SATA 10,000rpm 73.4gb hdd (dont know if it matters yet)
and with the case i bougght from xoxide (cheiftech black dragon server) i got a 450 psu made by power lab....

I have everything plugged in (correctly?) I am pretty sure its all good to go, but when i turned the computer on for the first time it posted for like 3 solid seconds and shut off...now when i turn it on it just flinchs, the fans turn for split second but then stop...no post. no nothing.

Anyone have an idea?

UPDATE: OK, so i bought new psu, true power antec 430, got it all in. before that i took the board off and re put it in....i don't get it. still flinching...

Reseat all cards & components and make sure they snap in snug
Make sure you have both power cables from the power supply plugged in
Make sure you don't have the motherboard shorting out by touching the case in some manner
Make sure you have the little power, reset, HDD, and led cables plugged into the right pins

both power cables from the power supply?

BTW: tried another PSU, same thing happening...

Actually you should have done the opposite.

Remove everything but the barest essentials.

Keep video, ram, cpu/HSF, hdd, floppy and keyboard/mouse.

Then try booting it up.

Have you looked in a mirror recently? 😛

Besides, you will get better help in General Hardware or Technical Support.

yes u do.

everything is plugged in, i just tried a new psu to...its still just flinching for a split second then nothing, the cdrom doesnt turn on or nothing, just the fans move. but the green light on the mobo is on...

First of all, wrong forum! 😀

- Unplug everything and leave only power supply & motherboard. Make sure motherboard is connected to the internal speaker. Turn the power on and you should hear multiple post beeps. If not your motherboard probably is dead (since you told me you have tried different PSU).

- Work your way up starting from cpu, memory, etc.

I've seen this before. A customer had his PSU set to 220V, fried the power grid on the mobo. When set back to 115, it just stuttered for a half second.

You might also have a crappy power supply.

Or you weren't smart enough to put stand-offs on the mounting plate.
Or you weren't smart enough to put the correct number of stand-offs on the mounting plate, and position them correctly.
Or you weren't smart enough to get all small loose metal parts out of the case, and you've got a short.
Maybe you didn't plug in the P4 power connector? Or maybe you didn't get a PSU that had one?

If all else fails, take a few details pictures of the inside of your system, focusing mainly on the motherboard.

Edit: and post them

but it sounds like your motherboard is shorting - check the stand offs are in the right position

Wrong thread, eh? I bet you feel like an ass for trying to be all cool and act like Nik, and fvcking it up.

I'm sure he meant wrong forum..and yes it is in the wrong forum.

anyways, the motherboard's shorted. Check the screws connecting the motherboard to the back of the case. I'd just take the motherboard out and put it back in. i'm 99% sure that this is the problem.

Just take the whole thing apart..put it together carefully this time.

That would be my guess.

First, if you haven't, make really sure that you didn't miss a standoff. Next make sure that you have the buttons on the right pins. After that, press and hold the power button, see if you get more than a flinch.

What he said. If you dont get the post beeps, your mobo is fried.
