Computer fails to start properly.

Basicaly what happens is when I turn on my computer it tried to load Windows for a few minutes but fails, it then restarts and I'm directed to a black screen in which I need to press boot normaly or something like that. It works almost everytime after I press that though.

I've had the problem for months and still havn't figured out why.
`I had the problem sense the first few times I tried to turn the computer on.
`I've done Windows Repair and that had no impact.
`Once the computer is up and running it works perfectly.

What could be the problem?

Oh and it doesn't fail to boot everytime... There also seems to be streaks of succesfull boots and failures (will work a few times in a row and then fail a few times in a row or 50/50)

You might want to check BIOS settings. If all is good then I would think Power Supply. (insufficient power to hard drive)

The only time I've ever been in the BIOS was when I first made it... I don't overclock so I wouldn't no what to do once I'm in there...

Look for what?

I have had this happen on a few different machines I build recently. It always seems to happen after installing updates via Windows Update but I'm not sure which update is causing the problem or if it even is Windows Update.

I usually end up reinstalling Windows and If I'm able to get all the updates installed without the "restart issue" it's completely reliable from that point on.

I was having boot issues and just general weirdness with an older rig running an Intel 865PERLK board.
I flashed the latest BIOS in Windows from Intel's site. Now it is a happy comp.

EDIT: How could I forget? http://www.badcaps.net/Ident/ Clean the board with canned air, then inspect with good light.
Cheep & free to clean & inspect.

Thanks so... possible problems

a. bad caps
b. windows installed wrong
c. needs a bios flash

Do I need to take the whole board out to inspect it? Or would taking the case off and peaping in there be enough?

Can I re-install windows without losing everything else on my computer? (That would kill me)

I have no clue how to flash a bios but if neccesary I'll look for a guide and try it.

Clean it with canned air, then use a strong flashlight. If the board is > 3 yo it is due for inspection. Just a visual, no need to take it out. Look at ALL caps 8mm in diameter or larger.

A repair install won't cause a loss.

The motherboard's home site will explain it. You can burn it to CD or floppy or do it in Windows.
