I just build a new computer and gave my father my old "guts", consisting of an AMD Athlon 3000+ (venice), an MSI K8N-Neo4 Nforce 4 motherboard, and 1 gig of Corsair Value Select ram. I used the computer for almost exactly one year, and it had always had this wierd issue with the motherboard drivers. When installing windows for the first time, everything worked normally, but as soon as I installed the motherboard drivers, windows boots would hang constantly at the "loading Windows XP" black screen. After about 5 reinstalls I figured out that it had to be a driver issue, but I just dealt with it by not rebooting the computer unless I had to. I could usually restart the computer until it finally pushed through the loading screen.
Anyway, fast forward to this week. I took it out of my case, and it still worked. My dad put it in his case, and it doesn't. No video, it beeps over and over with about a one second interval. It has the led lights that show what stage the board is in and it keeps hanging at the checking memory size stage. So we pulled one dimm and tried it, still does it. Put that one back in and pulled the other dimm in, still does it. Pulled both dimms and put in some other DDR memory, still does it. At this point I'm at a loss. We can't even get it to post, cannot get any video at all, obviously no chance to get into Bios. We've pulled the Bios out, cleared it, yanked the battery, tried every dimm slot on the board with every stick of ram I can find, and it refuses to go past the memory check stage. At this point I'm going to assume the motherboard is just fried, but I figured I'd double check here and see if you guys had any ideas.
Board is installed correctly, 500 watt generic power supply but the board does the same thing on a totally different power supply so I've ruled that out. Video card is the same one I was previously using which worked fine, an ATI Radeon x800 pro. All the power leads are plugged in correctly, we've tried it with NOTHING except the CPU/Ram/video card installed and still can't get it to do anything but beep constantly. I'm about to order him a new socket 939 motherboard from Asus, as the MSI had been nothing but trouble, but kind of want some confirmation from others to see if you agree.
