Computer energy consumption

I turn off my computer twice per week. However, I ask question to myself, How much energy does it consume???

Does someone know the answer for that question? Or it's better to turn it off every 5 hours or so

I have Pentium 3 (733Mhz) 128 Ram

Thanks

This has always been a controversial topic. There are about the same number of opinions on this one as there are computer owners in the world. So let me give you my own personal perspective:

1. Modern Computers uses much less energy than the old 486 systems and earlier.
2. My 19" monitor uses 150W while my 17" uses 110W on normal use. On powe save mode or standby they uses less than 15W each.
3. HDD uses less than 5W of power when running and a lot less when in standby
4. The entire system when in standby or hibernate mode uses less than 5W of power.
5. The total power usage on a system and monitor in hibernate or standby uses less than 20W of power.

I never turn off the system except to go in hibernate mode. Some OS like the Win9x series cannot survive such non turning off mode since they eventually crash. Unlike W2K or maybe XP they can stay robust even without rebooting. If you're on Win9X series I recommend you just turn if off when you do not intend on using the system for more than a couple of hours. Or if you have W2K then just go in hibernate mode. Turning a system on and off have very little effect on the reliability of the hardwares. Moder HDD are designed to do as such.
