My mobo fried I need to get up and running as fast as possible!!!!!!!!!!! Help Please!!

I have been out of the computer hardware loop since I build my last P4 computer years ago. As was expected things have dramatically changed. I am clueless about the new technologies in processors. My old P4P800 board failed and I cannot find a replacement so its time to look for new stuff. I wanted to use some of the old hardware listed in my signature but it appears its pretty much useless in the new technology.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for?
Typical office stuff, DVD burning and occasional editing, surfing and downloading. Be nice to have future video editing capability.

2. What YOUR budget is:
I was hoping to stay under say $500 but would go higher to avoid obsolescence. I really don't know what decent stuff costs.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from?
USA.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference?
Intel, Asus, are the only brands I have owned. Gigabyte seems recommended as well.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are?
HP2207H 22" monitor at 1680X1050. For now would like to reuse the 2 120 gig hard drives from my old computer until I get the data off them. Would reuse my Antec Case and 430W PSU if its big enuff which I doubt. Would reuse my optical drives for now. Would upgrade drives later.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads?
While I have searched many threads I really don't know enough about the present CPU or mobo technology to make an informed choice. I have to rely on your expertise.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds?
some overclocking perhaps...nothing drastic.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Immediately

I don't want to drop a ton on a video card at present so a decent budget card would serve me well.
I don't need a top of the line processor just something that will not become obsolete in a year or limit my activities.
The mobo I want something solid and easy to set up. I do not need raid. I do not presently use firewire. Sata is probably a good thing to have if I upgrade.Onboard Lan is a must.

I currently have win XP Pro 32bit. Would I need to upgrade to vista or could I keep it with the new processors. Should I go with a 32 or 64 bit processor..

I am basicaly starting from square one again PLEASE HELP ME out here so I can get back up and running quickly!!! I am down for the count here.

That board only runs at AGPX4....my card is AGPX8

I am not sure if they are backwards compatible I will have to try and find some documentation for my vid card otherwise that is what I will order........

Thanks for your help!

Your video card is keyed as universal... It will work on the Asus 865PE MB....... Order Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toss in a gigabit NIC while you're there.

The MB swap saves you some $$ over a fresh build,
Makes the swap easy since the chipset is the same,
Buys you some time to really think about and shop around for new build components

Thanks again...I tried to find drivers etc for that board on the Asus website....I could not find that specific board. It was listed as a P4SDX was the only thing I could find...The seller lists it as a P4SD-B0-R. I assume the R stands for refurbished.

Is that the same board? I want to be able sure drivers are available before I purchase anything.

Oh...and I can appreciate a good "sarcastic humor" post as well....It would appear you think my noob plea for "quick help" was "funny".......it's not so funny when your computer is down and everything you own is on the hard drives you can't access. Let me tell you that my friend!!!.....:)

X2 4850e (2.5GHz, 45W) $54
780G motherboard (VGA/DVI/HDMI outputs) $70 - $10MIR
2x2GB DDR2-800 $40
WD6400AAKS (640GB) $75
Antec EA380 $35

Total: $264AR

If you're not into gaming (which you don't mention) - buy this stuff & you're done. The 780G motherboard has onboard video good enough for most HTPC uses (surfing, general stuff, even Blu-ray decoding).

If you need a video card, go for either a 4670 (around $70AR) or a 4830 ($90AR).

I have been looking around and frankly I am leaning towards doing as you suggest. If I spend another $100 on an OLD system I only have a slow old system with old technology. I cannot really be sure some of this old hardware did not cause the board to fail in the first place either......

Look closely at the MB capacitors...
Are they bulging or leaking?

BTW, If you can wait for regular ground shipping, you can cut the cost of the Asus MB down to $59 total.

For HTPC stuff I'd go for an Nvidia chipset (8200/8300 for AMD, 9300/9400 for Intel) mobo like this one. Delivers surround PCM over HDMI, which the 780G won't. Also does proper 24p, I think...

I'd go with what Denithor posted unless you favor Intel, in which case get the Foxconn 610i/GF7100 board (only vga+hdmi iirc) and an E5200.

Yep, that's why I made the recommendation I did. If you had a newer system & one failed part I would suggest a simple replacement. But all of your stuff is old and may start failing (kinda like an old car - you replace one part and three more break - by the time you get that all fixed, it would have been cheaper to get a newer car in better shape).

Anyway, take a look at those parts - that will net you a much much faster system that you won't have to worry about for several years.

Ok here is where I am at presently. I decided to pretty much just start new with everything rather than patching up an old computer. Tell me what you think good or bad.

Do you think my old PSU will suffice or do I really need a new one?

One more time fellas how do you like this setup???

Pretty nice, the only thing I would change is the e7400. Either down to save bucks or up for more performance.

e5200 (2.5GHz, 2MB cache) $73
e8400 (3GHz, 6MB cache) $165

Now, there's two ways to approach this.

If you expect to need more CPU power within the next two years I would get the e5200, saving about $50 up front. Pick up a Q9400/Q9550 in about a year or 18 months for a drop-in replacement & significant boost in strength.

Or, spend an extra $45 today and get the faster dual with more cache and just use that until you're ready for your next complete rebuild (and based on how long that P4 has lasted you, this could be a while, so the extra horsepower would be welcome).

I don't know about your gaming but the e8400 / HD4850 would be really good ride at 16x10. As far as your video stuff it would be hard to top one of the Phenom II 920 combo deals out there.

Be advised that new mobos only have a single IDE for 2 master/slave drives so you may not be able to reuse your optical until you unload one of your hard drives (assuming it's all IDE)

I am looking at 2 memories which appear the same but the cost is vastly different...can anyone tell me the difference besides the massive heat sink?

G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit - Retail $69.99 - $20 MIR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231209

G.SKILL HK 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231219

the timings are identical so why the big diff in price and is the black series worth and extra $25??

Timings & speed make almost no different for system performance.

Either get the sticks I linked above (plain DDR2-800 from G.Skill for $40 shipped) or if you need faster memory for some reason get these: G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2-1066 ($45 shipped).

Alright, I'll help you build your computer, I have a paper clip, a rubber band, a nuclear reactor, some shurikens, and a bottle of phosphoric acid. Now...what would MacGuyver do in a situation like this...I know! He'd buy his parts from Newegg!

I think I read somewhere that some boards are having trouble with the 1066 memory and that they suggested the 1000 memory instead.

It just so happens the memory you linked above was the same memory I asked about in my last post.....Looks pretty hard to beat for $39.99.....:)

Will I still be able to overclock using the DDr2 800 memory at all?

Going with e5200/e7400 you won't be limited at all by DDR2-800 (this allows up to 400fsb which on those chips will be faster than they can go). On e8400 you will be able to run 3.6GHz (9x400) before you hit the end of the standard clockspeed of the memory. If you go with that chip you might want to invest in either DDR2-1000 for more headroom (allows up to 9x500=4.5GHz at stock memory speed).
