Computer doesn't connect to internet when connected via ethernet cable

We had four computers connected to the network last week but over the weekend we moved three more into the warehouse. Now that all the computers are settled, we're making a push towards having everyone connected by ethernet cable, however two of the computers can't connect and my phone can't connect either (my phone connected via wifi last week but not now).

My laptop connected via wifi last week but when i plugged an ethernet cable in, it wouldn't connnect to the internet at all, but that same cable works with another computer. The three other computers connected with ethernet last week works fine.

Any ideas what's going on? I was under the impression any connection with an ethernet cable should have an instant connection. I've reset the router to no avail.

Maybe your laptop does not accept wired and wifi connections at the same time and is still searching for a wifi connection. Somewhere in your settings try disabling wifi on your laptop and enabling the ethernet port. I suspect with wifi disabled ethernet is enabled by default if not enable it. Also make sure your laptop is not setup with a fixed IP address but connects via DHCP. Clear your old IP address and restart your laptop and see if it gets a new IP address automatically. The only other thing I can figure is you have a bad ethernet connector on your laptop. One other thing make sure your router is set to connect clients via DHCP.

Are they connecting to the Router?

Just taking donfm good suggestion to lower level.

Right click on the Wire card Network Connection, choose Status, Details, and see if it got an IP and the rest of the settings. On IP status.

TCP/IP and its variables typically look like this.

Typical TCP/IP status looks like this.

Description is the card manufacturing data.

Physical address
is the card's MAC number.

The xx should be a number from 0 to 255 (all xx same number).

yy should be from 0 to 255

zz should be from 0 to 255 (all zz the same number.

The lease date should be valid to the current time.

*Note 1.
IP that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is not valid functional IP.

*Note 2. There might be an IPv6 entries too. However, they are not functional for Internet traffic or LAN. They are needed for Win 7 special HomeGroup configuration.

Are the Ethernet cables working well? Are the Ethernet NICs working well?

Have static IPs been placed on the NICs? Is the router assigning an address to the machine?

These are the most likely scenarios I can think of, which may cause this issue.

i'll look into everything when i go to work next week.

but to answer a few questions, the ethernet port works fine at home so i'm sure it's not the computer hardware or the cables as I tried the cables on different computers.

Do you have access to another computer that you can connect via an ethernet cable to see if it connects? That would lead me to believe it's your computer not the network if it can't. You're right it's not a cable issue.

Ok this is a longshot and not likely but have you added more items to the network recently where you might have run out of allotted DHCP IP addresses from the router?
