Computer doesn't boot with Sound Card

I have a system that has an Epox 9NPA+ Ultra motherboard.

First, if I try to use a sound card ($10 sabrent 6.1 sound card), the computer doesn't boot up past the Windows XP loading screen, meaning it doesn't get to the users screen.

What could have caused this? It was working just fine about 12 hours ago.

Also, what do I need to do to get the integrated sound working? It's 7.1 channel and I have headphones plugged into the headphones out plug (green).

Realtek Audio '97 installed from CD, and then from new via online. Neither work. I heard NOTHING from my headphones, that's why I need the sound card.

Maybe I'll just get a USB sound card and get it over with. Maybe I have bad PCI slots?

For the integrated sound - do you have it enabled in BIOS?

Do files play and you just don't hear it or do you get an error that no sound device is installed?

Did you try plugging into the different audio ports in back in case the output is coming out of a different one?

Are you sure nothing is muted / volume is up?

Are you sure the headphones work?

It has two options in BIOS.

Auto and Disabled. I have it on auto.

I just don't get any sounds, volume is alll the way up, and yes I'm sure the headphones work because I used them on my computers (this one isn't mine) as well as this one with the sabrent sound card, which doesn't work now in this computer.

Please list system specs.

I would try this though:

Disable onboard sound with soundcard in. Then boot into safemode...install drivers ect.

EDIT: need to read more carefully (I do), you are trying to go back to onboard sound?
Check device drivers to see if there is an exclamation point next to the speaker. also try to update that way too.

Do you have the front panel audio connectors connected properly? If not, you have to have two jumpers across them or you won't get any sound.

Has sound ever worked before or is this a new rig?
If after installing drivers and onboard sound is still not working (make sure its all the way up, not muted etc), then something is wrong with your motherboard.

You can, alternatively, (if your case has front audio ports), hook those up to the motherboard, and then try that one if the back one doesn't work.

I don't have the front panel audio connectors connected, period because I don't use them.

The sound has never worked, this was a rig for a friend, but he got a different one.

Ah, so motherboard has problems...
I'll try front panel when I have time.
