How is he being short sighted? Sounds like you're stubborn to want to force other's goals onto his. What is the problem with wanting something particular? None. If it doesn't cause harm to others, I see no issue with this.

For the record I agree with getting a quality desk. I paid $400 for mine and its pretty small, but functional and a nice piece.
