I have been gone from home for a while and when I got home my desktop doesn't work. How could you tell if the power source is bad without taking it to someone to check?

Ok, I couldn't see it before, but the light on the motherboard is on. I thought that it wasn't working. If the light on the motherboard is on, what would be my next step?

unplug the power switch and try to trip the switch using just a screwdriver across the two pins for the switch doubt your power switch is a dud though.
did you try turning the psu on?
if that works then its your m/b.
