Computer crashing.

Ok it's a long story about what all I've done with my computer, but it's been crashing randomly for months now. I thought it was the ram first, so I bought new ram and it didn't help. Then I found that my hard drives were bad so I bought a new one, and it fixed some problems but not all. It's still randomly crashing and I'm pretty much at a loss what to do.

The crashes happen more often in games than anything. It goes to a blank screen for a second then shuts down and powers back up. Never gives any error messages or anything. I've run memtest for 7 cycles with no errors. I ran a stress test on the CPU and after about 10 minutes it did go to a blank screen and did nothing both times I did it. Could be related to the CPU then, but still could be the motherboard or power supply. The temperature of the CPU is about 118F idle, and right after it crashed I checked it and it was 143F.

Any other information you might need just ask!

If it is crashing during gaming I would take a look at your video card (see if it is dusty), and find out what temps it is running at.

Specs arrrree...

Pentium 4 3.6Ghz
GeForce 6800XT
2GB Corsair DDR2 533 ram
250GB hard drive
450watt PS Antec
775 Dual VSTA motherboard

the video card is a possibility but it crashes even when I'm not playing a game, it just happens more often when playing.

What kinda cooling you have on that Processor? If I remember correctly those P4's HEATERS! just get a temp monitoring program and if your temps while gaming are above 80C you know your cooling is bad Id check the Heatsink and maybe clean and re apply thermal compound

CPU temps seem to be fine, however I did just find out that after only 10 minutes of UT2k3 the video card temp got up to 70C

It is? interesting..

the CPU temp I'm getting from either speedfan, or from the bios. The bios is showing 140F tops, right now speedfan is showing the CPU at 45C..my room is pretty hot right now though

Id try maybe Running Prime 95 or Orthos and see if they lock it up if so you know its CPU/Memory/PSU/Mobo not GPU

Well I ran Prime 95, and after about 5 minutes the CPU temp got up to 60C then crashed just like it always does

I think I MIGHT have spotted the actual problem. I went into the bios and disabled the hyper threading. Now I've been running prime 95 for over a half hour now with no problems
