my computer crashes while reading from cd-rw drive. i recently changed the motherboard and put in a new cd-rw drive. now when i read data off the cd-rw drive, not only is it very slow (52x, so slow...for some reason), it also gives me a blue screen with some drive error a few minutes after reading data. could this be due to a defective motherboard? or do i need to do a format? this is the only drive on my computer so i dont want to format yet. im afraid that if i do format, i wont be able to install windows xp. also, this burner burns fine. no problems when burning.

Yea...they are burned CDs. So are you saying the problem could be cheap media? Or just the fact that they're burned.

Does it read other Cd's fine? Try something from a reliable source, like a original software install CD? And also I did not get why you cannot install XP if you refomat?

Make sure you have all the correct drivers installed for your motherboard chipset, check Device Manager to see if anything is conflicting with the drive.

Some CD-ROMs don't like burned CDs. Sometimes the burn process isn't good and only the burner can read the CD. There are a lot of reasons. I always take a burned CD and try it in another non-burner to see how it works.
