hey everybody,
i just built this system a month ago, and it has had problems from the get-go. whenever i try to play ANY game, it freezes immediately almost every time. whenever it does run, however, it runs *beautifully*. what am i doing wrong??? here's the specs:

C2D e4300 (currently OC'd to 2700mhz, not oc'ing doesn't make a difference)
ASUS p5b deluxe wifi
-mb includes onboard lan, wifi, and sound
2 gigs patriot pc5300
evga 8800gts 320mb superclocked
OCZ 600watt gamexstream
soundblaster live! 5.1 digital platinum
wd 320gb 16meg 7200rpm
asus dvd-rom
monitor, speakers, etc.
Windows XP Pro

the games i'm currently trying to run are:
halflife 2 - hangs about 90% of the time, always when the 3D title screen is starting to load
fear - hangs about 85% of the time, usually after the save game loads, then freezes/artifacts after about 3 sec
oblivion - hangs about 85% of the time during loading title screen or loading game
halo - freezes about 85% of the time
planescape torment - game stutters

also, if i get a game to load, usually will crash after an hour or so with a video error after i report the error to MS after restarting the pc. i'm currently using 158.22 forceware drivers, no version of any foreceware drivers has alleved this problem in any way. this is *so* frustrating, does anyone have any ideas???

Artifacting points to the video card. It's either overheating, or doesn't have enough juice. Is the video card properly connected to the PSU?
Use Riva Tuner to monitor the temps on your GPU, post back.

i wouldn't think it is overheating, i have tons of case cooling. it's running about 59C not under heavy load. the thing is, it usually craps out BEFORE i start a game. if i can get the game started, it runs awesome for a long time. i'll watch it's temps

59C isnt exactly cool. Especially for non heavy load. And I agree that you may not be getting enough power. You also may have a defective video card.

tank: 15a on 4 rails. By specs, that should be fine.

59c is about right for that card.

- Re-install DirectX 9

- See if you can run 3dMark06

- Check ram using Memtest86

- Make sure onboard sound is shut off in BIOS

- Check Virtual Memory settings (default to "let windows manage" if it's not that way already)

- Uninstall-reinstall video and sound drivers and use DriverCleaner to get rid of the crap in the middle (i know you've probably re-installed video drivers countless times, but just in case)

- Uninstall the sound card and use onboard

Have fun! There's about 5000 things that could be wrong.
