Computer Crashes/Dies when playing certain games lately

My current build is in my signature. It started while playing SC2 Beta, however with a couple fixes to the framerate I guess it fixed the problem, they said it may have been an "overheating" issue that was common with beta. However NOW I'm noticing its happening when I play Battlefield Bad Company 2. I'll be playing on multiplayer then all of the sudden the computer just dies randomly, the whole thing. When I boot it back up my desk top icons are all re-arranged differently and I have to fix them. Any ideas?

What's your power supply? Sounds like the most likely culprit to me.

This. I learned my lesson the hard way that your PSU is just as, if not more important than your video card. A beefy video card, lots of ram, couple drives will kill a PSU if its not up to par.

If it helps any, I've had some issues with BC2 as well. Sometimes I'll just be playing and the picture and sound just completely freezes.

My computer is completely healthy and has no other issues. I personally think your power supply is enough for your build, but there's always a chance that it could be the culprit. I'm guessing BC2 just has some bad programming in it.

My cousin has issues with BC2 as well (quitting to desktop). Every machine I've installed it on has at least 1 problem with it so far.

Is this a legit version of BF?

Thing is, I don't think any game should be causing a system to turn off completely mid-game whether legit, torrented or however means.

Looks like your PS is sufficient for your hardware, but that doesn't rule out that it's free of flaws.

It definitely sounds like some hardware issues are at play. I'm still going to stick along the PSU -> Vidcard -> MB route unless otherwise.

psu > bad ground on MB > vid card > MB

hmm I should get the PSU tested. if it does turn out to be bad, any suggestions for a new PSU based on my specs?

PS Yes I have a legit copy of BF, its not just battlefield I've seen it with I did see it on SC2 Beta before they had me adjust some things because apprantly before the patch there was an "overheating" issue that caused PC's to shut down. And when I say my comp crashes, I don't mean it crashes to desktop, it full on TURNS OFF when I play BF in mid game.

have you checked the mobo standoffs? Make sure that you didn't pinch something or screw one in where it might short one of your wires?

It really sounds like a ground issue to me.

Is there a general way to test my hardware like with a software that will let me know if there's any issues with my hardware?

You can actually take your PSU into a Best Buy and have them test it. This is how I found that one of my 12V rails was messed up and not giving anything. Best Buy did mine for free because it is just a little mechanism they hooked up and told them in 2 seconds.

Well it does happen I have a non-legit game and it will just crash in the middle of doing things.

You could buy one of those PSU testers, Antec even sells one. I don't know how reliable it is though, it seems to be hit or miss. This might be what the other person was saying that best buy did. I have one, it has a LED that turns green/red depending if it's good or bad, but that's it - nothing about if it keeps up with the voltage and rails.

The real way to test a psu is to buy a multimeter and test it from there, but this takes precaution and knowing what you are doing as well as how to operate one.

A cost effective guessing way is to just leave your system running under full load from different sorts of benchmarks that will put your rig in throttle. Then if it dies down mid-bench, you'll know something is wrong. This is only as a $0 test, and doesn't always work. You get what you pay for.

Yeah, but you mean crashing right? As in, a freeze or bsod and that sort. That's different. The OP's PC turning off is not normal behavior, it's another ballpark.

I did do a memtest it came back fine. Im worried that it is my PSU. I left my computer running last night when I went to bed, nothing was happening on it, just forgot to turn it off. This morning I came outside and it was off, like it turned itself off. PSU you think?

could be...but if it wasn't under load, why would it crash?

Have you checked to make sure all your fans?
