computer crashed, now wont boot up

i was playing a game of warcraft, and i got the *usual* crash that i get while playing; blue screen of death and restart. this time however had a different outcome. now when it starts up, it keeps "counting" my memory, and resets (memory count, not computer) and starts over. when i press escape, it skips the memory to go to the previous settings (512 ram) and none of my ide drives are recognized. it does detect the proccessor and the floppy drive. is my motherboard shot? i havent played around with the ide cables at all because my computer is behind a desk, and it is a pain to put it back together. thanks for reading my confusing problem 🙂

Try clearing the BIOS to see if that helps any. Best way to do that is to move the jumper, pull out the battery and unplug the computer and let it sit like that for a while, sometimes it'll be quick to clear and sometimes it might take 30 minutes.

Before trying that, go into the BIOS and have it redetect all your HDD's. There is also a setting for the memory count too, which I convently can't remember the name of it is.... maybe some will post it.

i guess my cmos got resetted. i checked the settings and both my ide ports were disabled. it boots up, (well atleast to the win xp pro screen) and it takes foreveeeeeeeeeeer. nothing you would expect from a 1700+. im thinking one of my cmos settings is wrong, but i dont know too much.

i am still having a problem with the ram. every bootup it counts it unless i press escape, and it takes a while to go through 512 ram. is my 512 supposed to show up under extended or base memory? it says my base memory is 640k and my extended mem is 512. so if someone could help me with my memory problem that would be great 🙂

Your 512 MB RAM will show up under extended memory. You can never change the base memory, a lot of that was for the old DOS days, when doing memory management, under the autoexec.bat or config.sys, don't remember which and glad I never had to deal with it as I heard it was a pain to do.

You're welcome 🙂

Edit: I'll find out later tonight about the memory count, I'll have to check my BIOS to remember the name and PM it to you.
