Computer couldnt get past bios screen, now wont turn on

I have a really strange problem. Two days ago I came home and tried to turn my computer on. It just hung the bios screen where it shows the cpu, ram size, etc. So I decied to open up the case and maybe reset the CMOS to see if that would do anything. It didnt't fix it, but after it wont even turn now. I made sure all the conections from the case to the mobo are on and still have the power issue. I know the board is getting power because there is a green LED lit indicating it is. I'm starting to think maybe the motherboard died.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to try to fix the issue, if it can be at all, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: OK, I got it to turn on, now its stuck at PCI device listing. Does this sound like a dead motherboard?

Its possible you reconnected the wires incorrectly when you opened the case to have a look-see. Did you take out the RAM/CPU/VGA while you were at it? These are the next things you should check to make sure everything is seated right.

If you can get the PC back to its previous stage of stalling at the BIOS screen, then you could try figuring it out from there.

My guess; maybe the order of your installed pci cards conflict because of IRQ's ?

NOTE: I'm basing this advice on win98se as I'm in the process of ordering parts to change to xp, but not done yet.

Can you get to a creen where you can examine IRQ's usage or assignment ? Maybe 2 devices are being forced to share the same IRQ and don't like it.

What's in bios as far as IRQ assignment ? try changing them one at a time, save "new" bios config and re boot; you may have to do this several times, but it seems to me you want to get to a diagnostics screen (e.g. via control panel) to print out IRQ assignments.

Turn off machine, pull out pci cards.

Install one in, turn on machine and see what happens.

Maybe try this until you think you have pci cards in correct order.

good luck

😀
