I recommend getting absolute bare bones systems, and then getting all the parts you need separately and adding them in. These guys have awesome deals on motherboards and accessories, but adding anything beyond a CD ROM drive (dvd rw, cd rw) is a waste of money. Since Cendyne cd-rw's are going for free to $9.99 if you look in the right places at the right times.

Hard Drives are going cheap too, pay less than $1 a Gig if you wait for rebate offers. (Sometimes as low as $30)

Then all you need is a monitor, and I've seen 17" CRT's (I got a flat panel one) for $70ish from OfficeMax on a thread I posted about Logisys Monitors a few weeks ago.

Memory is also something to consider buying minimally, and then upgrade as the rebate offers come out from Crucial.

Just my advice. I bought an identical system a few weeks ago to meet Christmas deadline, and paid $40 more than what I should have. But hey, it got here way before (in time) for Christmas.

How can you get that by $214. I tried all configurations, but can not get the price down to that much.

Lowest I could get was 276 and there was NO way to go lower since some items can't be removed. I think he might mean celeron 1.7. The lowest celeron 1.7 is 210 + ship + (tax)

Anybody else have any experience with accessmicro.com? Prices for barebones systems seem pretty decent (although I wasn't able to get the $214 + shipping for a P4 1.7 GHz either).

Accessmicro is a big and reputable company. I have ordered many things over the years and never had a problem.....

I don't know if they've improved but they formerly were one of the worst stores as far as RMA/support. I don't trust em.

I personally had a bad experience with them. I bought a barebones system including an athlon 1.33 which was in a very small case that caused bad air flow. As a result there was an overheating problem. Since the powersupply is so close to the cpu, i couldn't put a bigger heatsink on the cpu. THey sent me a replacment but took forever to do it and it turned out to be the wrong system (they sent 1.1ghz instead). It took forever to sort the mess out. I hate them and will never do business with them again.

what's in a case? it's the power wattage you gotta worry about... 300 W is generally OK.

i've configured a monsterous rig for $1,000 through them.
i've configured a budget rig for $260ish.

and i will soon configure one for $214.

read reviews out there, nowadays there is no downside to buying a Celeron chip. It's all myth...

Accessmicro is great with timeliness, support, and quality. No complaints, purchased a lot. But do your research, they offer a lot really cheap; and they overprice some things a lot. If you do the right configurations, you can come out winning.

I recommend Pricegrabber.com EVERY part you add to your comp. And OBVIOUSLY install your own CDRW, you can get them for 10 bucks from bestbuy - from another thread here...

So if the processor in your configuration is actually a celeron, shouldn't you change the thread title and get rid of the word "Pentium", since a Celeron is not a Pentium? I'm gonna take a *crazy* guess here and say a Pentium 4 1.7ghz cpu would outperform a Celeron 1.7ghz cpu

I've had good service from them and started buying from them a few years ago. But I believe you can find better prices, just shopping around a little. Also you should check McGlenn Micro, the prices are a couple of dollars more usually but the shipping is cheaper (usually). They are the same company, for more than one quanity I always found McGlenn cheaper. I havn't ordered from them in awhile since I always seem to be able to beat their prices. Anyway good luck.

Celeron and p4?

The p4 is much better at running benchmarks than a celeron. ;)

If you're running actual applications, you'd never know the difference. Very few applications benefit from the extra cache. In fact, if you get a 2.0ghz or better celeron, its a northwood core p4 with all the goodies, except for less cache.

Now if you're a hardcore gamer, hey you have to take the 293fps pentium 4 vs the 240fps celeron, right? Oh yeah, the human eye cant tell the difference between anything over about 40.

Here's the deal: if you're doing 720x480 video capture and piping it to an mpeg4 encoder, a big movie might take 6 hours on a p4 and 8 on a celeron of similar clock speeds. Either way, you going to sit around and watch it work?

As long as you're on the plus side of 1.6ghz, you've got more iron than you need.

As far as beating their prices, I'm amazed - I just quickly priced an AMD m/b bundle. Comparing them to the company that owns many of our mortgages - Newegg - accessmicro actually came out less, plus they offer the 2 year warranty.
Obviously further investigation is warranted,
As far as Celeron vs P4 - if you can o/c with air some of the 2Ghz Cely's have been doing 3Ghz.
This is equivalent to my sweet little 300A which has been running at 450Mhz since 1998.

Hey kof.

You might think about getting a 566 and replacing that 300a and going to 850. You need a slotket. A very inexpensive way to almost double. Same 100FSB. No other changes needed.
