Computer clock won't Keep the correct time

My computer clock won't keep the correct time, it keeps falling behind in the time. I have set it from the control panel and even when I restart the computer. After about a day or two it will no longer have the right time. What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help. 🙂

Not dead, but getting weak. It's just time to change it. Open up your case, get some tweezers, and squeeze those two clips that hold it in, and it should pop right out. Then, go to a Radio Shack or something and pick up a new battery of the same kind.

Merry Christmas!

The battery is probably fine. The clock is an integrral part of the MB. If the clock runs slow even when the system is powered up then there's little you can do but replace the MB. It appears the components that lock the clock frequency have varied out of tolerence and there is nothing you can realy do to resolve the problem. The only time you should suspect the battery is if the clock (and BIOS settings) reset when you remove power from the system.

I thought most systems these days supplied power to the CMOS battery even when the computer is "off" (soft off) so there would be not reliance on the battery only. Like ZZZZZZ said, the clock should only start losing time when there the computer is not connected to a power source.

Whoa, you guys...let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater (re: replace the motherboard)...there ARE other things that can cause the clock to lose time.

Do you have ANY software from Norton installed? If so, what specifically do you have installed...SystemWorks? Norton Antivirus? Cleansweep? There is a documented problem with certain versions of this software that causes slowdowns in pc clocks.

Additionally, Microsoft has their own page about this issue. Read about that here:
