I need to test a few antivirus/spyware tools and the only real way to do it is get a computer infected with them. How exactly would I go about doing this? How can I do this while making sure I don't infect anyone else? Obviously, I'd run a modified cat5 cable that could only recieve and not send data. Any ideas would be appreciated.

On which part? 😛

VMWare will let you run Windows on a Linux host. The Linux host won't be infected with the Windows malware. Keep this box isolated from everything else (ie. nothing else on the network), and you should be fine.

TCP requires two-way communication. A receive only ethernet cable can't respond. Also, I think ethernet ports (NICs, and switches, and hubs oh my!) require all pairs to be present to have an actual connection (although there might be some trickery you can do, since I've seen the rx only ethernet cables mentioned when it comes to ethernet taps).
