I used to have 2 Athlon Xp machines running out of a cardboard box.. Just put the motherboard ontop of an anti-static pad in a box, and the HD + Cd-rom laying next to it.

When I worked in a PC shop our test bench was setup like that. Just a mobo on an antistatic pad.

I finally talked the owner into using a mobo backing from an old case. Just made me feel better, though the old way never had a problem.

Never heard the word sputz before, but yeah, that is pretty retarded to have to do that just to take a picture.

UltraMon rocks, though, for multi monitor Windows systems it's a godsend. I have 3 monitors.

Edit: and the guy above, mobo on an antistatic sheet, bah... I had my server's motherboard placed directly onto a painted metal shelf for months and it never caused a problem.

Just make sure it really is painted, and make sure that you don't scratch the paint off with the mobo pins. Heh.

Not necessarily. You need a constant airflow over the heatsinks and the motherboard. So if they pointed a desk fan at it, or had a nearby window open, it would be good.

I always just used packing styrofoam sheets to place my open motherboards on. Always worked like a charm.

But yeah, if you're not plannign on moving your computer, ever... put a fan over that and overclock the blue hell out of your system.

I'm guessing that's not very quiet.

Silence is for the weak!!!

I imagine it would be silent since there's really no point for the power supply fan anymore to blow heat out the back..and the PS fan is generally the loudest part of the system anyway.
