Computer can't start without installation DVD in drive...?

Was having problems with this computer that I thought was due to a failed HD, so I installed Windows 7 Pro 64 on a different drive. Installed without obvious problem.

Tried to restart computer without DVD in drive, and it keeps saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". If I put in the installation DVD at this point and hit enter, it keeps giving the same message.

If I put the installation DVD back in and restart it, however, it will say "Press and key to boot from CD....." and then start fine if I don't press any key. On top of that, the HD that I thought was failed (see thread for more details) seems to be working fine now.

Not sure what to do next. Any ideas?

Hardware specs:
Abit IP35 Pro
Q6600 (non-OC'd)
4 GB RAM
3 Samsung HDs, one 300 GB raptor, one Hitachi 2 TB
Nvidia 8800GT
Corsair 620 watt PSU

I did - I believe all 5 drives were attached during the installation.

But I've never had a problem doing that before, and in fact I decided to install Windows 7 because I was having the same problem starting from the previous OS installation after juggling all the HD cables around to make space for a new HD. I thought installing the new OS might fix the problem.

Did I miss something? What're you thinking?

Also in case anyone asks, I've also got my BIOS set to boot by (1) optical, (2) HD. The HD order is also set correctly (to boot the HD I installed the OS to first).

Thanks again RM - I reinstalled with only the C drive attached, and it seems to be working fine now. I never would've guessed, never had a problem like that before. I learned my lesson! Once again, I really appreciate your help. 🙂

if I reboot my rig with my phone charging via USB, it hangs at the boot screen. Freaked me out the first time it happened.

Silly Windows, we have lots of stuff!

You are welcome. It's always nice to get a "thank you" when I occasionally luck onto a solution.
