Computer can't connect to Internet through cable modem directly

I just reformatted my future mother in law's computer for her and I'm having issues with the Internet. It works when it is connected to a router that is connected to the cable modem, but not when it is connected directly to the cable modem. I can't for the life of me remember what I had to do to set it up in the first place. Anyone have an idea of what I am missing?

The Router?s MAC number is probably the correct Authentication.

Nope. It works when my laptop is connected directly to the cable modem.

Try a release/renew on the IP address? Set to DHCP?

Try setting the NIC to 10mbps, full or half duplex should both work.

Got it working, thanks. Called the cable company and they reset something.
