computer business-ish

So me and some friends were bored and got the idea to start a small computer repairs operation ...kinda informally, kinda not. Anyway, I see it as kinda like mowing lawns or stuff like that (we're all in high school, and you dont register a business to mow lawns for people). Do you guys have any comments as far as the legality of this? Should we register as an official business, etc., or are we OK as long as its fairly small?

Creating a partnership will leave you with unlimited liability, meaning if you guys on your first appointment break a server and they sue you, they can go after your personal assets as well. Personally I would form an LLC so that your liability is limited to the amount invested in the business. That being said, I would sit down with your friends and come up with a way to market your business and evaluate if you will have enough clients to even bother with it. Computer repair is a tough business to get into nowadays.

also, i honestly think being in high school is going to hurt you guys.

if i'm an average joe who's computer is on the fritz, entrusting it to some teenage kids would be tough for me to do. you guys are going to have to try very hard to exude a professional image, and appear "older" than you guys really are.
