Computer Build Help

Howdy,

I've got a P4 desktop running windows XP on an HDD that has been needing a major update. I've planned my new build for a while and today I finally have ALL my new parts ready to build.

My only question is, my current HDD has alot of music software on it that required authorizations, and the drive I have for my new build is an Intel X25-M 160 GB SSD with a fresh copy of Windows 7 ready to go onto it.

What is the best way, if even possible, to clone my HDD programs and files onto the new SSD. I have yet to install anything on it. I wanted to have this part mapped out before I proceed. Do I need to clone, or can I just put windows 7 on the SSD and plug in my HDD as a secondary and keep everything running? I would rather have my music software on the SSD for the speed aspect, but I'm hazy on how this part works.

Any suggestions? I know about Acronis, I just dont know how it works and when I would do the cloning, before I dismantle this old desktop or after I build the new one.

Thank you!
