Computer boots to snow screen; Mobo fried?

Background: I haphazardly installed a second hard drive yesterday. In the process of fitting my hard drive into my computer, I unplugged the power cord to my 6800gt video card. Before I attempted to boot up my computer, I forgot to reconnect the power cord into my VC. As soon as I hit power, I smelled burnt electronics and the computer did not boot.

I turned my computer off and unplugged all of the cords in the back. I then carefully removed all components: hard drive, video card, ram, heatsink/cpu, power supply, and drives. Scanning the mobo for any signs of damage, I meticuously looked at all the caps and the board in general for any signs of damage. I did not find any. Further, I looked at the cpu, ram, and video card for any signs of damage. Again, I did not find any.

I reassembled my computer and powered it up. All the fans turned on, I heard the hard drive working but my screen had snow/Matrix (the movie) type display and did not boot. Moreover, my mobo made no beeps. I figured maybe it's the CMOS, so I disconnected the power supply and reset the CMOS. When I booted again, I got the same display.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking its the mobo or video card. I'm leaning towards the mobo b/c I couldn't get it to beep. Again, there are no visible signs of damage. Is it possible to fry a video card by NOT connecting the power cord?

Thanks All.

Going out on a limb here: The mobo tried to supply enough power to the video card, and killed itself in the process? Good luck, hope nothing actually died, but im not betting on it.

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, It just gives me a reason to upgrade. I've been eyeing the 939 cpus for awhile.

Same thing happened to me a couple months ago. I just turned my PC on and then heard a Loud, screeching noise, then smelled burnt electronics. The PC booted up to a black screen tho, I just upgraded from a 754 3000 to a 939 3700... I don't even know if my old 3000 still works...though I'm pretty sure it was my mobo.

Sounds more like it is the power supply that is damaged. Not having the video card plugged in will just give really annoying high beeping, rather than frying anything.
