Computer boots, now output to monitors. GPU problem?

Hi, I put a new computer together over the weekend. Twice now when I go to boot it for the first time that day, it will seem to boot ok, but I will not get any output on either of the two monitors I have connected to my XFX DD R7950.

If I restart, I still don't get anything.

If I leave the computer on and plug one of the monitors into the Motherboard adapter, it'll show that Windows has started. Rebooting again seems to fix the monitor connected to the GPU (and I can then put the other into the GPU again). Since this has only happened twice, I don't know if switching to the Motherboard fixes the GPU or if I just get lucky on that reboot.

Anyone know what the problem could be here? I have yet to have it happen while restarting or powering down for less than a few hours (see if it happens again tomorrow morning).

Graphics card seems ok to me, but I'm no expert. The idle temp is 47C and under 100% load from Furmark the max temp is 79C. Fans only go up to 74%. What are normal GPU temps? I'v had a laptop for the last 5 years.

is your video card installed into primary pcie socket? Usually the closest one to the CPU.

Make sure that your bios is set to Initiate the PCIE graphics adapter as PRIMARY.

I recently had problem in my parents computer with video card not outputting video when harddrive cables were connected to SATA2 MOBO controller. I had HD4870X2 in that MOBO squishing down connectors on SATA controller, i am guessing things flexed a bit too much.

If you have buch of other stuff connected to MOBO they may be screwing up the PCIE slot, espcially if mobo is not new.

you can try to boot into windows and install video card driver, and see if that helps, although should have no effect on bios seeing the card...

MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast 650W Tx
Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600 Memory

I'v got Windows7 on an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD. I'v also got a Samsung 1TB HDD.

The motherboard is new, I'll check the connectors but I don't think any of them are being squished.

What type of monitors do you have, and how are you connecting them to the gpu and motherboard?
Does it make a difference which monitor you plug in to which video source?

I have two Acer AL2223W. They are connected to the GPU, one by a DVI -> HDMI and the other by a DVI -> DVI.

It does not seem to matter which is plugged in where.

The problem did not happen again this morning or when I got home from work.

If it happens again I'll look for more data. If it does not happen again by this weekend I'll chalk it up to graphics drivers (which I reinstalled last night).

Graphics drivers should nothave an effect of you being able to see BIOS boot screen. It could be a bad/dirty conector/socket on the video card. Constantly pluging it in/out you cleaned it.

It happened again this morning.

Plugging into the motherboard showed me the windows screen. I went to Device Manager and Windows7 did not list my graphics card under Display Adapters, only the Intel HD 4000.

Does this new information help?

?

How do you connect the monitors to which? One to mobo's and one to video card's? What kind of connection, DVI, VGA, HDMI or DisplayPort?

Sounds like a connectivity issue to me.

Normally I plug both into the graphics card (HDMI and DVI). When this issue happens and I get no output from the graphics card, I unplug one and plug it into the motherboard to view the windows Desktop.

If it was just the monitor cables why would the graphics card not show up in device manager and why would the same cable work fine on the motherboards port?

If the fans on the graphics card are spinning does that mean it's on?


Edit: Let me restate my problem, perhaps more clearly. Sometimes (not every time) on a cold boot Windows 7 does not detect my R7950 Graphics Card, only the Intel Integrated Graphics. Restarting from Windows (not holding the power button) fixes the issue.
