Whenever I try to get into the bios this is what i see.

Sometimes it displays a black background with grey boxes instead. The computer boots fine into windows, but I need to get into the bios to boot to a usb stick.

New issue or always been this way? What video connection are you using? Does onboard video do the same?

The screen on the laptop does not work, so I have it hooked up to a tv through HDMI. I am not sure if this has always been an issue as I have never tried to access the bios before. The laptop boots into the windows login screen but I forgot the password, so I need to enter the bios to boot from usb and reformat.

OK, gotcha. Good to know what computer we are talking about. I am not 100% sure about HDMI initialization at that level, but I think it should work. Can you try a standard VGA connection for comparison? It may depend on what the primary output setting in the BIOS is.

I don't know if you did a Google search (I did) but there are a lot a matching questions, few to none provided an answer that worked for the OP (although in many cases, as usual, the OP just disappears).

Yeah I did a google search and nothing seemed to work. The laptop model is HP HDX16. I am going to look for a vga cable right now.

You sound like me, never know where I will find a spare cable.
