Computer audio for a band

Me and my buddies are starting up a band, just for fun mostly, but we'd still like to be able to record it all onto the computer. So I am wondering what you guys would reccomend I get to connect up a bass, an electric guitar, and two drum sets on the computer and then software to edit and mess around with it in. I'm not going to be doing anything really high quality or anything, just having fun.

So what equipment to connect it all up, and what software do you guys reccomend?

M Audio has a sound card that takes Mic's plugs and such. I would look into that for hardware recording wise.

And software I don't have a clue.

If you don't have a mixer with direct outs, then you're going to need a multitrack interface with enough mic preamps to handle all of the things you need to record at once (how many mics on those drumsets anyway?). Covering the US$600 to $900 range, the Presonus Firepod and MOTU 896HD (with 4 and 8 preamps, respectively) are two Firewire interfaces that have been well spoken of. If you already have a mixer to amplify the mics to line level signals (and perhaps mix some of them down into subgroups), then you could consider something cheaper, such as the M-Audio Delta 1010LT (a PCI soundcard for ~US$300), though of course the first two interfaces mentioned will still be better.
