Computer Always Freezes Fast

Hi everybody,

The problem I'm having seems to be getting worse and worse over time. A couple of weeks ago, my computer would start to hang upon reboot. After a couple of tries, it would get through to Windows XP. However, before too long, it just wouldn't go into regular Win XP. At first, I thought that there must be a software issue, and ran Win Xp in safemode w/ networking. This worked...I surfed the web, for quite some time. However, it froze in this mode as well.

Before long, I could not get past the Windows startup splash screen.

My first inclination is that it was a heat or power related issue, but nothing has changed in over a year since I last modified my machine.

The most noticible thing is that I hear a click coming from my computer that I don't ever remember hearing. I believe that it is coming from my primary hard drive (I have a couple next to each other, so it's hard to tell). The strange thing, is that the computer continues to work or boot after the click. But it tends to freeze shortly after.

I was able to boot to CD and reformat / reinstall windows. However, it froze a couple of times during installation, and had to be rebooted and the install continued. Now, it won't boot into windows because:

"Windows could not start because hte following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System"

and it tells me to run a recovery console to fix it.

Does anyone have any idea about what is going on and how I can fix it. I can replace the hard drive if that is the issue....but I don't want to replace parts that aren't the cause of the problem. The issue seems hardware based to me, although I suppose that it could be a REALLY nasty virus.

In fact, I just rebooted and now it says that "A disk read error occured" Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart", although that came after the computer tried to boot from the cd (of which there is nothing in the trey).

I could really use some help in debugging this issue. I just don't know where to start with fixing it. It could be a number of things...what do you think it is?

Thanks in advance for all the help. I really appreciate it.

The famous clicking noise. Backup your important data IMMEDIATELY and get warranty service on your HDD if available. It's amazing how long they will work after it starts clicking...but that is no reason to play w/fire. Your data is not safe and you better hope you can back it up with no problems.

Hmm,

Thanks for the tip. I don't know if I have space to back everything up, but I have the irreplacible things like documents backed up onto a second HD now. Things like music and stuff can be replaced, albeit a hassle.

I guess I might be in the market for a new drive.

So do you thiink the clicking means my hard drive is failing?

Thanks

How annoying...I'm a college student...barely enough money to spend on other things.

But, that hard drive is at least four years old, so I guess it isn't too bad. Besides, I'm trying to migrate all of my drives from IDE to SATA anyways. Just one more left.

I haven't stayed up with the tech scene like I used to. Who makes the best SATA HD's for reasonable prices. Western Dig? Maxtor? Seagate?

I'll probably splurge and get about 200 GB. I need it for all my video files.

Quick question.

Is the hard drive that is failing the one that Windows XP is on (and the one that I try to install Windows on, only to have it freeze) or could it be the other HD on the same channel. I just don't want to replace the wrong one, although I suspect that it is my primary HD, and could check by removing my other one I suppose.
