Yes, thermal tape will work fine. I used some that I had to attach an external probe to my T-Bird.

EDIT: Here is a Picture of mine. It could be better by trimming the plastic on the tip of the probe some, but with my Alpha 6035, this was the best I could get so the Alpha would still fit flush on the T-Bird. The tip of the plastic touches the core, and still gives a pretty good reading when compared to the thermocouple results that I looked at in Mike's link on the subject.

does cutting it have any potential negative effects? i mean, wont that allow the thermosistor (the actual wire) to come into contact with the air? is that bad? thx ;)

Just install it like I have mine. Like I said, it is accurate enough that way. I have been thinking about drilling a hole in my Alpha so I could insert the probe directly through it to the core, but until then I am satisfied with the results the way it is setup now.

The less there is between the probe and what you wanna measure temp the better ( unless it is thermal tape, or kinda lie, then you can use to stick it around with small temp misreading.

You probably don't want to use thermal tape to attach the thermistor, since it transfers heat, from any source, be it pcb, air, or heatsink.

Follow Technonut's instructions, they're more than adequate for getting the best readings at a reasonable price.
