Compression format for Windows and Linux

For the last few years I've been using ZIPX (WinZip) compressing files for either protection or for archival purposes.

Lately I had to open a ZIPx on an Ubuntu machines, but I never figured out how to do it.

What is a good compression program supporting strong encrypting that can be opened on both platforms?

.zip, .7z, .tar.gz... Really, most of them work. Pick one that has libre code, and it should work fine. I use .zip for maximum compatibility, .7z for best compression, and .tar when I want an archive, but don't want to compress.

rar is for antisocial wienies :^P

I overlooked the encryption. I'd probably go with .7z for that. For a two step process, you could probably archive with anything, then gpg encrypt the archive. You'd have to protect the keys, and it adds complexity, but it's cross platform, and open technology.

Ok thanks for that!

It does become a problem when one gets entrenched in Windows as it's often hard to find an equivalent in the Linux world.

However since i first gave Ubuntu a go about 10 years ago i can't really complain 🙂
