Compressing the Disk Drive to save space in Windows

In windows, you can have the option whether or not to compress the drive to save disk space. what exactly does this do? is it benefial or no, can it slow down your drive? Just wondering. 😕

TIA

NTFS has the capability of storing files compressed.

Advantages: Files that can be compressed (i.e. documents) take up less space

Disadvantages: Files that are compressed are going to be less safe in the event of drive issues

Generally speaking if you are running out of space you should be looking at buying a bigger drive and not compressing everything.
