Compressing space in WinXP

On NTFS partitions, I'm given the option to "Compress drive to save disk space" under that specific partitions properties. Are there any disadvantages to enabling that option? How much space should I expect to gain if any? For example, I have a small 6 gig partition that has about 500 megs left.. would I see much of a difference?

This is just that I can't get a larger hard drive... at least not yet.

Like with any compression, your results will depend on what type of data you are compressing. If the volume is full of mp3 and mpg's, you will see little if any compression. If it's log files, you might see 90%.

The compression is reversable (just remove the compression bit), so try it and see...
