Compressing files using a SSD?

techs

Lifer
I was wondering what happened if you compressed files using the built in Windows compression utility on Windows 7?
Would you gain free space? Or, do SSD's already compress data?
How else might that affect performance, drive longevity and data security?

Only Sandforce based drives compress data at the hardware level, but that isn't know to Windows or other OSs. You can then compress the files using Windows again to gain space with Windows itself with the only downsides being overhead due to the compression. More CPU usage and additional latency are the two that effect the user the most.

just do it:

compact - google it. your dll and exe files compress them all. dont compress the filesytem or turn on write compression that will suck. but have a job that sweeps the drive and compresses them monthly. your 1 core will work harder but load times will be faster.

fact: everything on OSX is compressed, and that optimizing for your system part is placing/defragging/compressing for optimal boot/load time on osx. (snow leopard and newer).
