Composite to SD Card video recording for Grandfather

Hello all,

I was helping my grandfather today and one of the things we were looking at was his underwater camera while we are out on the lake. He was commenting that he would love to be able to record the video output on his SD card so that he can review it later. I looked at the unit and see that it has a composite video output. He needs something with a Composite video input that will record to an SD card at 480i/60 resolutions. It does not need to support de-interlacing as that can always be done at the computer later.

I was looking and saw that there were video game capture boxes that are used, but it it appears that most of the old ones (standard definition) do not support SD cards. You can get new ones that have PC Free modes and do HD, but since HD isn't needed we wanted to see if there were better options before springing for such beasts.

I also know there is an option to convert the composite video to another format, such as HDMI, and then capture that, but that didn't appear to offer any cheaper options. We also thought about using one of the cheap composite --> USB adapters for PC capture, but we would need a recorder that then accepted the USB webcam-like output We definitely want to stick to SD cards, as being in a boat, hard drives will be far too delicate.

If anyone knows any useful products, it would be much appreciated!

EDIT: I should actually summarize that what we are looking for is a video recorder that is self-contained, with a start / stop button, an SD card slot that can preferably take SDXC cards, and does not require a PC to do the encoding. We need a portable unit 🙂
