Components in my power supply blew up!

I bought a semi-cheap case about 2 years ago that came with a 250 watt power supply. The other day while my computer was turned on, with me not using it, it would randomly reset itself. So later that night when I was using the computer, I heard a loud fire-cracker type sound, my computer shut-off, and I smelled an electronics burning smell. Well I suspected the noise came from my PS, since the computer would not turn on anymore. Also, what else could make that loud of a noise. So I took the PS out of the computer, and opened it up to see what it look like inside. Two of the capacitors that are about 1/2 inch tall had blown up. The outsides of the caps were just rattling around in the case. Both the the cap tops that had blown up were dented. I think they launched to the top of the inside of the PS really hard. I have never had this happen in all my 15 years of computer experience. I guess I will need to go buy another PS now!

I had something similar happen to a old 250 watt PS a couple 1/2 dozen years ago. Working on the computer and then all of a sudden I hear this weird noise from the PS fan. It sounding like a grinding sound that got slower and slower. The sound eventually stopped when the fan came to a halt and then the PS burned itself out. I could smell burning plastic/PCB in the room and the computer just turned off. Ripped open the PS after I got a new one and look at the PCB bored. Lots of the traces were blackened and some of the components had melted. Don't think it was a power surge or lightening as the day was nice from what I can remember. Strange, glad I didn't loose anything more than the PS.

Didn't happen to be made by Deer by any chance? I've seen several similar threads, all of 'em Deer psu's....

I guess that just proves the saying.. Nothing Blows Like a Deer(e)! (OK, so I've been shopping for lawnmowers recently and am feeling punny)

I've blown up 2 Power Supplies (Antec), 3 MotherBoards, 2 sticks of ram and a Monitor this past year🙁 I'm cursed or a dumbass. BTW, those Deer PS suck major ass. They put them in all those cheap ATX cases. Get yourself a Sparkle. I like the PowerMan PS, been running my one machine for over a year, 24/7.

Deer junk? It is odd to hear that knowing I have had one 250 watt Deer for 3 years and a 300 watt Deer for 1 year and a friends system has had one for 4 years.

The PS I was using was just a generic one. Probably the reason why it ended its life prematurely! Power supplies should last for the life of a computer and maybe longer. Anyone got the MTBF on some power supplies for comparison sake?

The PS was the only thing that fried, so thats cool. I'm borrowing a PS from a friend until I get off my lazy butt and go buy a new one.

Hi!

Mine had blown up too (250W PSU) after 2 years (a 47 microF capacitor). But the dust is the only cause. The FAN got stuck by it...
So keep on eye on the dust.

Cheers,

Between 50,000 and 100,000 hours MTBF looks to be common I guess. 50k hours is a bit more than 5 1/2 years. However this is all based on the following: 25C and 70% load. Once you start exceeding either my guess is that the MTBF decreases exponentially. Someone with a EE degree or similar will have to verify that for me.
