What are the must have components for an electronics work bench?

Any good sites for buying these things?

I've checked out sparkfun.com, but it doesn't seem like they have a big variety of small resistors and capacitors etc.

Are the irons on sparkfun any good?

You mean tools, or parts? For parts, I always use Digikey (and Newark maybe once or twice).

If you're talking about tools, a good soldering iron is a must (Weller or similar), as well as a standard assortment of wire cutters, wire strippers, needle-nose pliers, and screwdrivers.

If you're looking for a variety pack of resistors to get started with, I got a bag from RadioShack for pretty cheap that had a wide assortment of resistors.

I had the same problem. I just wanted a small variety of resistors, capacitors, etc. I eventually found this. A bit pricy, but a decent way to get a grab bag of everything. The first kit is probably what you want.
