Component video to VGA (or DVI or HDMI) adapter?

I'm trying to find a way to use my computer monitor, which has VGA, DVI, and HDMI inputs, to play my Playstation 2. I have the component cables for the PS2, so I was wondering if anyone knows of an adapter that can do this? I would really prefer something cheap like a cord adapter if possible, instead of one of those expensive converter boxes.

There is no cheap way, other than getting third party cable for your ps2.

In the ebay product description: "This adapter only works with the following ATI Video Cards: ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500, 8500DV, RADEON 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700 & 9800 series of video cards." I'm guessing it won't work in your situation.

The only cheap option I can think of is to get a cheap TV card for your computer (assuming you have a computer connected to this monitor), connect the PS2 to it, and play it through a software program on the computer. The cheap TV cards typically only accept composite cables, which won't look great, but it will allow you to play the PS2 on your computer monitor.

Why would a VGA breakout cable not work?

Forgot many TVs don't have horizontal or vertical sync input. Pretty sure component sync is on green.

Yeah that is pretty much it.
VGA uses R,G,B for color + Hsync + Vsync
Component uses R,G,B for color but puts both Hsync+Vsync into a single signal embedded on the Green signal. So the box has to extract the sync from green then split it into separate Hsync and Vsync.

Sounds complicated but the circuit is really simple.

If your particular ps2 will allow you to output progressive 100% of the time (feature varies by model) you can change the output format to RGB and use one of these with a vga gender changer.

how can i check if my ps2 will output progressive all the time?

actually i really only want to do this for guitar hero 2, and that game does have an option for progressive scan. so would this option, then, work for that game?

also i really dont care if theres a green tint i just need to be able to have a fluid video.

i have an adaptec gamebridge, and presently i have my ps2's s/pdif out hooked up directly to my speakers (so as to eliminate audio lag) and i use the gamebridge to capture video. the problem is that every vid cap program i use has issues; best case scenario there's little if any lag but the video is just jittery; it makes it difficult to read the notes when they're really close together. this is not an ideal solution.

oh i dont know if it makes any difference but im running gh2 in pal mode, which is why im trying to do this in the first place (i don't have a tv that supports pal).

Yes, it should work for that game at the very least. What I read is that you can change the default output format to progressive by starting the ps2 with no disc and changing the menu setting to progressive. I wan't sure what you'd be using the ps2 for, so I included the disclamer about some not being able to output progressive 100% of the time - this (mostly) applies to earlier units & some issues with dvd playback in progressive. If you can't change the default output in the console menu, gh may have an option for it in it's own menu(s) or you may have to press X + ? at game start-up to force progressive.

yeah actually the game does have an option for progressive scan in the video settings menu. so that's pretty badass, looks like i should be able to do this for cheap . thanks.
