Component Video Output

Here's a question for the experts out there:

I wish to connect the analog d-sub output of my video card to the component video input of a 480p projector or a TV. How would I achieve this? I've seen it done in a magazine before a while back, but forgot which issue. I remember that all you do is simply splice some wires from a spare component video cable into a spare monitor cable, make the appropriate settings on the video card, and voila... your computer has now become an EDTV source.

I've seen adapters that go from VGA to component, but as far as I know it's only for certain pieces of equipment and a computer output will not work right with it.

I've had good success with both a 9800pro and a 6600gt with component output though for 480p to my projector.

What kind of videocard to you have?

Some video cards have component out adapters that can output 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

There are also VGA to component transcoders, of course they'll only work if you have the PC outputting 480p, 720p, or 1080i.(which just about any PC should be able to do)

I have a 9800PRO as well. What should I do?
I want to avoid using s-video of course because 480i on a big screen is just unreasonable.

Ati sells a ~$30 vga to component adapter for the 9800pro.

I have a spare adapter from a 9700pro AIW if you want... send me a pm. I'll see if I can dig it out from my spare parts cabinet. 😕

This is the adapter you want.

TGS, is that the same one for the AIW 9700pro? (I know ATI makes a number of component adapters and he needs a DVI to component adapter)

I got mine from newegg.

I am actually looking for an analog 15-pin monitor connector >> component video adapter, not DVI :S
Thanks for looking though!

wow the ATi prices are hardly worth it 🙁

The ATI prices are dirt cheap if you have a supported card (the shipping is outrageous, but I've seen them at Newegg for cheaper). If you don't have native YPbPr output, a transcoder is going to cost you a few bucks. You can try AVS forums and maybe find a DIY on the cheap if you are handy with a solder gun.

I don't think the vga adapter will work for you.

compatable cards for that one:
ALL-IN-WONDER 9600 Series
RADEON 8500 Series

The newer 9xxx cards use the DVI to component adapter.
