Component video for dvd players

I recently purchased a Philips Divx player and im interested in getting a component video cable. However I really only watch divx movies and never regular DVDs, so I was wondering if component video will provide better divx video quality when used with component video as compares to the regular audio/video cables.

If a component cable would benefit divx playback, does it matter which brand? I can get one thats $20 by a company called Recoton or a $50 from Monster cable is there a big diffrence?

Component should be a big difference from regular composite cables. How much difference you'll notice depends.

You can always return the cables if you're not happy with them.

Don't worry about spending a lot on the cables. Any decent quality cable is fine, especially for short distances.

I'm not sure if divx supports progressive scan, but if it does then component will offer much better quality (as S-Video and composite can't do progressive).

Yeah, don't spend money on those overpriced Monster and other cables. I'd recommend buying online as most brick and mortar stores overcharge a lot for cables.

Thanks fo the advice, I believe DIVX does support progressive provided they are encoded as such.

Cables for Less has some great prices, but they dont ship to Canada, I think I will order from a brick and mortar store just because it will be easier to return.

I have another question however: My dvd player supports component progressive video, and my TV has component input as well, but I am unable to find out if my TV is component-interlaced or component-progressive.

Is it safe to assume that most recent TV sets support 480p? its a 20" Toshiba with "Colorstream" which is just a marketing term for component video.

Component is a big improvement over composite, since the signal doesn't have to be combined and then run through a comb filter on the display end to seperate the signals again. If you don't have HDMI out from the player, and most don't yet, then component is the way to go. After that would come s-video, and then the composite solution on the ghetto end of the spectrum.

Just go to Wal-mart and buy a 6ft component cable for $10. That's what I did and it works great.

The higher priced cables might be better if you're running 30ft lengths and 1080p video...but still probably won't look that much better.
