This is the 3rd system with same failure senario:
** underlined components have/had some sort of failure or overheating.

1ST: XP 2400+ | NF7S mobo | 100 & 120 gb wd hd | Cendyne dvd burner
NV TI 4200 vid card |Enamax eg36p power supply | 512mb pc2700 corsair XMS

2ND: 3000+ newcastle | VNF3-250 mobo | 100g wd hd | 160gb maxtor | NEC 3520A burner |
9800 pro vid card | Vantec Van-350N power supply------>PC Power and Cooling
Turbo Cool 425 ATX | 2X 256 corsair pc 3200------>1gig stick guile value ram

3RD: Opteron 165 | Asrock Dual Sata 2 mobo | 100gb wd hd | maxtor 160gb hd |
300gb Maxline III SATA | NEC 3520A burner | ATI X850XT agp vid card |
PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 425 ATX | 1gig stick guile value ram.

1ST system: lost 120gb HD & Cendyne burner. Video card overheated case temps were high.

2ND system: 3000+ temps went from 30 to 49 degree c at idle within 2 weeks (different heatsink made very liitle difference)
(hit 60c one time under heavy load) Ran this system for 1 yr until 3/1/06 upgraded to system 3.

3RD system : Opteron went from 28c to 40c @ idle within 1 week. event viewer errors : atapi errors/ 160gb hd
bad block/ controller failed to respond . NEC burner--NERO 7= parameter out of bounds on spinup test.
350mb folder from 100gb to 300gb sata: time to copy says 2 days 13 hrs...

Yesterday I was leaning over the case and ever so slightly brushed against the power connector for the 100gb wd hd
(already booted into windows) and the drive spun up and made a clicking noise. So I duplicated it by just genty tapping
up then down on the Hd connection it did it again. I was looking at hardware moinitor in the Bios . Voltages on 12v
dropped to 11.7 went to 12.84 then returned to 12.212, not only the drive made a clicking noise; but, so did the PSU.
doesnt matter which connector is plugged in from power supply. Apprently There is a loose connection inside the drive it self.
So I'm Thinking , that 100gb HD has been the cause of all my woes?
Also should I RMA that power supply as well? The mobo/opteron/hard drives will be RMAed

Could there be some point in that case making contact and causing a short? Are the brass standoff's holding the MB's keeping the back of the MB from touching the metal?
