I have no plans to upgrade my older Onkyo receiver that doesn't have HDMI, but we're looking to get a 70" tv soon (perhaps a Samsung UN70KU6300). I read that going with component cables would be just as good even with 4K? Most activity source will be from a FIOS set-top box using component cables. I was looking at this pic and wasn't sure why there are only 2 connectors for component... I'm used to the 5 cables... what is this sorcery?

Or I could just bite the bullet and bypass my dated receiver for sound? Really not much other reason to use it anymore (Roku and FM music being the other inputs).

component wont carry 4k

when you get a 4k source, connect it right to the tv
run an optical back to the receiver

you are most likely only going to get 2.1 sound that way as 99% of TVs wont and or don't pass 5.1 or higher over optical like that

Thanks, looks like the component adapters do come with the tv - saw it in the tv review.

You really should use HDMI over component if you can. It's not like HDMI cables are expensive. (Don't buy them in store, use some place like Monoprice.) FIOS should offer an HDMI box if yours doesn't have HDMI already.
