What's the best resource for learning how to solve stuff like z^4 = -1? And polar/rectangular form.

take a complex variables class. you go through the derivation of the complex system, complex functions, complex integrals, etc.

interesting stuff.

Can anyone explain what the actual point of complex numbers is? I remember asking my high school math teacher this and getting a vague answer.

High School, maybe middle school, depending on what part of the country you live in assuming the US. Also assuming you live in the US because you're even asking.
