Completing POST problem

ok guys, I need some help here. I have this machine, its a somewhat older HP pavillion 850mhz, 320mb PC100 RAM, etc...
This computer is basically a re-build. I put in new memory and hard drive. I was able to install windows 2000 and other peograms before leaving work but...
when I went to plug it in at its final destination, it wouldn't complete the POST. It will read the memory (320mb system memory....OK) then it would hang after displaying the following:

UMB upper limit segment address: E86C

(note that this is before scanning the IDE devices)Now, I have checked the memory, the slots and it isnt that because I brought in a third stick and tried different vatriations of different sticks in different slots. Any help would be apreciate, thanks.

*I also posted this on the hardware forum

Try installing <=128MB RAM and updating the BIOS. Then reboot and see if you get farther. If all is OK, install rest of RAM and reboot again and see what happens.

I would if I could but It freezes if I try entering the bios. I have already tried clearing the CMOS by removing the battery for 5 minutes. If I constantly hit F1 on boot, It will say "entering setup" but then it just hangs there.

Can you enter bios after having removed ram? Try going down to 128 of ram and entering the bios. If that doesn't work, try clearing the cmos with a jumper pin.

Do you have a manual with the layout of your jumper pins? Hp hopefully should have sent one with the system. There even may be some lettering on the motherboard itself. It should say cmos or something of the like. You just need to short the pins above or below the current jumper. It should be a 3 pin setup and 2 of them will be shorted, for example pin 1 and 2 are covered. All you need to do is cover pin 2 and 3 instead for like 30 seconds. Then switch it back to 1 and 2. You should be good to go then.

sounds like somtheing got shaken loose. i'd check every connection and reseat the cards.
good luck

thanks, yea thats what I thought too...something might have come loose but naw, I re-plugged in the cards and made sure that all the connections were there =\

its an athlon, how the hell do I reset the processor? Well anyway, that UMB thing reffers to Upper Memory Block...so I am baffled

It was re-seat not re-set, another words, pull the Athlon out of the socket and put it back in again.
