Just curious-- on the highway today I noticed 3 cars left on the side of the road with white towels hanging from their windows...I've noticed this before but never really thought about it...

What is the reason for this?

Thanks...random life question :)

Block the sun maybe?

That's my guess.

Maybe they left their 3 month old in the car while they went for gas...

I always assumed that was how the tow truck recognized what car to tow.

Because it's the first rule in THHGTTG, and they want to publicize they are followers of it :D

This is the correct answer. It is also a sign to passers-by that the person is in need of assistance. At least it is supposed to be. . .unless people are too stupid to know what it means.

I had always thought that I missed something in the driver's ed handbook.

If I leave my vehicle for any reason, I usually leave a note on the dashboard so any state troopers will know why it's there.

"blown head gasket; tow truck to pick up this afternoon."

I never quite understood the towel thing.

Oh, so that means any car with a white towel is fair game for me to tow away...now all I need is a truck. :D

Thanks for the info...I figured it was something along those lines.

That's what I thought, too, which is why it makes no sense. If you need assistance, then hang the towel out your window and wait in a safe place in or near the car.

But people do it when leaving their car by the side of the road. I think people just do it now because they have seen others do it so they think they are supposed to do it anytime they leave their car by the highway.
