In Georgia -- despite one lawmaker's plea that there were more pressing topics to tackle -- the legislature passed a bill recognizing grits as the state's official prepared food. The breakfast staple joins peanuts, peaches and Vidalia sweet onions as Georgia's designated food symbols.

From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/07/01/new.laws.ap/index.html

I hate to single any one group out, since there's a whole article of stupidity -- It just kinda caught my eye. 😉

And they paid all those lawmakers ton's of tax payers money just to make grits the state's official prepared food?

[sarcastic] Boy, that sure is a thing to stand up and be proud of. Just pat yourself on the back Georgia!! [/sarcastic]

Humm... I see something bigger brewing up here. 😉 (ie... He had so many grits in his mouth, I couldn't hear what the terrorist was saying..)

Mmmmmmmm Grits MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm 🙂

I got to say that I loved those grits at Dennys.

Does the legislature indicate whether or not that "Official down-home grits y'all breakfast" should be served with butter, salt and pepper or some other method?

Damnit - How do Georgians eat their breakfast grits anyhow? Surely the Attorney General has a breakfast grits policy in place now that breakfast is a legal issue. Can a Georgian restaurant now serve grits any old fashion or is there a legal framework in place to spiritually guide the chef's grits preparation? Is it an indictable offense to serve 5-minute grits instead of the "real thing"?

If you were working at a state institution and you served cornflakes despite there now being a published view that "breakfast is grits" could you face 120 years in jail and $800,000 in fines??
Phew Georgia on my mind.

You better believe it, Mate.

Not only that, but at the center of the issue, and overriding everything is this question: As a professional nutritionist, do you need PERMISSION to serve the corn flakes? Not the kind of implicit permission that comes with your job as a nutritionist, but specific, detailed permission.

There's a whole GBI unit that have become "Grit-Experts." They're lecturing at Emory Law on the evils of cornflakes. :disgust:

Does this mean that they are listening to cell phone conversations to make sure everyone is eating their grits for breakfast?
I would like to know if quick grits are legal or do they have to be the long cook type.

Instant Grits are OK in my book... : )

We like "Dinner Grits" - made with some bullion and butter, served with salt and pepper on them.
Nice. : )

I got hooked on grits when I was stationed at Ft. Rucker, AL. The mess hall had them available
every day for breakfast. We really should lobby for having the legislatures blow off important business to declare
grits a national treasure. :Q

You know what'd be REALLY good? Grits on toast with VEGEMITE! yeah! 😀
