I used a razor blade to get 99% of it off, and "Goof Off" to remove the rest ("Goof Off" is a solvent sold in many hardware stores that removes latex paint, gum, etc.).

I resorted to sandpaper: gives the extra benefit of smoothing the surface as well.

thanks a lot guys,
but wouldn't something like a razor blade scratch the surface causing more harm and a less effective HSF? i was gonna use my exacto knife but when it made a scratch on the heatsink, i decided otherwise...

I didn't use a razor blade either. I used a soft piece of plastic to scrape the bulk and a cleaning product called Thoro to disolve the remaining material. Thoro smells a bit like dry cleaning fluid and you can purchase it at stores like Payless drug stores-- maybe Walmart has it.

yeah, vegetable oil and canola oil will take it right off. a fine sandpaper is great too, because it provides a better surface for the heatsink.

Go to Home Depot, Kmart or Wal-mart, wherever you want. Buy a bottle of Goo-gone next to tapes. It works like a charm.

Put it on the train tracks. When the train runs it over, all the gunk will stick to the tracks and not the heatsink! :)
