A friend of mine is buying my computer (below) with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, n52 and speakers next week for $1400. I'm going to use the money to buy this:

Shuttle SN25P Socket 939 Barebone
NEC 3520A DVD Burner
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 160gb SATA Hard Drive w/ NCQ
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB SATA Hard Drive w/ NCQ
GeIL Value 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
eVGA 6800GT

= $1537 shipped

It's not really what I want but I can't pass up the offer. I was hoping to get a 4400+ but the 3700+ will have to do for now.

So basically I get to:

1) Get a second chance at picking the right case. The Sonata is alright but I wish I had gotten a Shuttle.

2) Double my RAM. Maybe I'll be able to enable precaching to raise my minimum FPS in newer games. I'm not looking for higher average frames though.

3) Replace old IDE drives. NCQ, what more can I say? No more chugging along with poor IO performance during heavy disk access.

4) Double my L2 cache. The 3700+ should give me a teenie bit of a performance boost over the 3500+ Winchester and should hold me over until I can finally afford a 4400+. Not planning on overclocking this chip.

A true friend would reccomend the replacement system to the friend. Just kidding. Not a bad upgrade for 130 dollars. Of course if you don't overclock his 2.4 will beat your 2.2 with the cache. However, the San Diego's seem to overclock pretty well so you must get at least 2.4 out of that chip!

I'm selling it to him because I'm moving next week and won't be able to build one for him. He's going to pay me by the end of the week and I'm going to wipe, format, preinstall programs, transfer his files and settings and OC it for him.

Not trying to be shady, it's just convenient.

I don't know how well the Shuttle can handle the load already so I'm probably not going to OC. I doubt the 2x1gb ram can oc well anyway, not a big fan of dividers. Maybe I'll do without a CPU for July and just buy a 4400+ August 1st when I have the cash for it.

I know you aren't being shady. I was just razzing you. I am going to the 4400+ around the end of July also. I am holding out for the dualcore. I already have my Koolance, Raptor, Audigy 2, Seasonic 600, 2 1gig Patriot PC3200 dimms, montiors etc. I am waiting for a more reasonable 4400+ OEM, ATI 520 or G70 Ultra to complete my system. I am going to hope the 5:4 divider works and I can get 2750 watercooled out of the 4400+ and still keep PC3200 on the memory. If I am really lucky I will get 2800 and have 205 on the memory, LOL.

Edit: I am learning Autocad, Photoshop etc so I want the extra gig of memory versus higher bandwidth.

how is that not being "shady"?
I assume you told your freind about YOUR deal/upgrade right?
The whole point of your post is braggin about what a great deal your getting by selling your PC to a "freind" at an inflated price so you can get a huge upgrade for $130.

You're including your monitor, keyboard, mouse, n52 (whatever that is, Nintendo 52?) and speakers for $1400. It seems like you're giving your pal a pretty good deal, he'd have to spend much more than an extra $100 for a complete the system you'll be buying because he'd still need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. I'd estimate your friend would need at least $1800 to complete the system you're building for $1537, because it sounds like he'd still need all the accessories.

He was planning on buying a $2000 ALIENWARE OMG FAST FAST computer. I saved him from that and showed him what he could get if he did it himself. He came over and said "damn, how about you just sell me yours and buy yourself another one. I like what you have and would like one but I can't put a computer together. You won't be here."

I think $1400 is very reasonable for a relatively new, quasi-high-end, custom computer.

Also, spec out my current system at newegg and tell me how much it is worth. Assume everything is new.
