Complete Newbie DVI question

This is one of those "are you sure you are smart enough to operate the computer" questions, but I searched and could not find the answer for it. I figure it is an easy answer to anyone who runs DVI.

I just got Asus N6600GT AGP card which has DVI-I output. My LCD is Viewsonic VX710 which has DVI-D input. So, I got a DVI-I Dual Link cable and hooked them together... and I get nothing. Analog VGA cable works as expected, DVI doesn't.

On my LCD, I have a menu option called Input Select, which can be set to Analog or Digital. Except that if I set Digital, it goes blank screen and then image appears with a little "Analog" box. I figure it tried to go to digital and failed.

So, what do I need to establish DVI connection? Do I need to enable it somehow on video card or does it send the signal to both VGA and DVI automatically? The video card came with no printed manual and the manual on CD is skimpy and says nothing about DVI.

I know a lot of people don't think DVI makes a difference on a 17" LCD, but some people do see a difference, so I want to try it to see which camp I am in. What am I doing wrong?

Try setting the monitor to Digital, then restart or turn on the computer. You could also go into your video card's control panel and manually switch to the "second" monitor (DVI port).

Looks like DVI is not working for me. 🙁 I don't have the option to switch to second monitor, not on Nvidia control panel, not on System tab in Display Properties. I tried to use DVI to VGA adapter that came with the card and it didn't show anything either. Looks like my computer is not aware that the card even has DVI, and searching for it, I don't think there is a special procedure for getting it detected - you just install the drivers and Windows finds it.

Maybe I can ask someone on Asus forums if there is a special trick to detecting DVI on that particular card. I got the card used, so I can't really replace it, I don't think.

Thanks.

Try this:
Shut down the PC and monitor.
Connect only the DVI cable from the monitor to PC.
Turn on PC and monitor.

Anyone else notice the OP said he got a DVI-I cable?

Unless i'm wrong, you need a DVI-D cable.
