COMPLETE newb with broadband

Hey guys,

I'm seriously hoping to make the switch from dial-up to cable (or DSL) very soon, but have a serious problem (I think).

My house is rather old, and on the upper floor, there is only one cable walljack, which happens to be in the unoccupied guest room down the hall, while my PC is set up nicely in my room.

Is it possible to get cable if your PC is not in the same room as the cable plug? Is there some kind of router or wireless modem I could just setup in the guest room and connect wirelessly that way? Or heck, even stretch cables from the guest room to my PC?

Sorry about my complete lack of knowledge on this subject. Any info would be most appreciated!

You can set up the cable modem and a wireless router in the guest room, and then connect through wireless, or ask the cable guy to run the coax cable to your room and set up everything there.

Oh, great! Thanks so much.

I'm probably going to look into the wireless router option.

So I would just have the modem setup next to the cable outlet, with a wireless router setup next to it, and that would work through walls/doors to my computer roughly 60 feet away?

Do cable sompanies provide/rent routers, or would it be better to buy my own?

Thanks again! You have given a life-long dial-up user hope! 🙂

Definitely buy your own router. They cost less than a month of broadband service in many situations. If you are going to use wireless, make sure that you SECURE YOUR NETWORK? There are lots of threads about how to do this.

I think that with many routers and receivers, you won't get a great signal at 60 feet away and through walls. You may want to consider getting the router closer to your location or running ethernet cables to your computer from the router.

In general, the Wireless idea is good.

However since you are going to use it 60' and few walls away it might pose some problems for basic Wireless connection.

You would have to station a Wired computer near the Modem Router spot in order to configure the system (see here for explanation: http://www.ezlan.net/faq#onewire ) and then try the Wireless 60' away.

If the Wireless does not work well 60' away you would need the extend the coverage.

Extending the Distance of Entry Level Wireless Network.

In other words (depending on your environment) it might be a better idea to cable.

First let me thank everyone for replying and helping me out with this.

For the sake of accuracy, I did some measuring, and the actual distance would probably be less than 50 feet in reality. Also, as far as walls go, there is not a solid wall between the rooms. I basically have my room (with the computer) at one end of the house, and less 50 feet away, down the hall (with no walls inbetween, just a slight curve in the hallway), is the cable outlet in the guest room.
I'm also willing to spend up to $100 on whatever gear will serve me best in this, and open to all suggestions and advice. As someone who's been stuck with dial-up from day one, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get into broadband as switfly and painlessly as possible.
